Michael Cohen, a former private lawyer for US President Trump, pleaded guilty on the morning of December 12 and was sentenced to three years'imprisonment by the New York Federal Court. Before the verdict, Cohen also attacked his former boss Trump, saying he was responsible for covering up the president's "dirty behavior".
According to foreign media reports, Cohen pleaded guilty to concealing to Congress the inside story of President Trump's past business dealings in Russia, violating financial regulations and tax evasion in his election campaign on December 12 in New York Federal Court. Cohen also said that his "foolish loyalty" to Trump "led him to the path of darkness rather than light".
According to the verdict, Cohen needs to report to the prison by March 6 next year. At the same time, he has to pay $1.4 million in compensation and $50,000 in fines.
Cohen had previously pleaded guilty to eight counts, including tax fraud, bank fraud, campaign fund irregularities, and paying a "seal fee" to a star rumored to be Trump. Before Cohen was sentenced, Trump said on the 11th: "Cohen is lying, he just wants to reduce his sentence."
Since Trump came to the White House, Cohen has been the fifth person to plead guilty or be convicted about Trump. The other four included former national security adviser Michael Flynn, former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manaford, former campaign assistant Rick Gates and former campaign adviser George Papadopoulos.
